Professor Zhiqi Chen Returns as T.D. MacDonald Chair

 

OTTAWA, September 29, 2004 – The Competition Bureau has announced that the 2004-2005 holder of the T. D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics is Professor Zhiqi Chen, a professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. This is the second time that the Bureau has welcomed Professor Chen to this position, the first being in 1998-1999. For the next year, Professor Chen will be working with both the Competition Policy Branch and the enforcement branches at the Bureau, advising on economic policy and enforcement matters.

Focusing his research in areas such as Industrial Organization, Antitrust Economics, Growth Theory and International Trade, Professor Chen received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1991. Since then, his work has been published in various academic journals including the RAND Journal of Economics, the International Journal of Industrial Organization, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy.

The T.D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics was established in 1990. The position is named after the late T.D. MacDonald in honour of his extensive contributions to modern competition law in Canada. Mr. MacDonald was the first Director of Investigation and Research from 1950 until 1962.

The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency that promotes and maintains fair competition so that all Canadians can benefit from competitive prices, product choice and quality service. It oversees the application of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act.
