Lack of "dealer identification" on garments

In March 2004, the Competition Bureau received a consumer complaint indicating that some haute couture garments from Italy were being sold in Canada without the dealer's full name and address.

Pursuant to paragraph 11(1)(b) of the Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations, the name and postal address of the dealer must be shown on a label permanently attached to every garment.

Bureau representatives discussed with company representatives the labelling requirements set out in the Act. Following the discussion, company representatives made a verbal commitment to:

  • print the missing information on the labels of garments they had received earlier, in order to comply with the Textile Labelling Act and the Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations;
  • make sure that the dealer's full name and postal address are indicated on the labels of future products.

The issue was settled in March 2004.
