Lack of "dealer identification" on textile labelling

In September 2004, the Competition Bureau received a complaint from a consumer who had observed that imported textile products were offered for sale in Canada without the name and postal address of the dealer.

Under paragraph 11(b) of the Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations, in the case of this type of clothing “the name and postal address of the dealer” must be shown on a permanent label attached to each article of clothing.

Representatives of the Bureau discussed the requirements of the Act with respect to labelling with the company’s officials.  Following the discussions, the company officials agreed in writing to:

  • include the missing information on the labels on the clothing in their possession and to recall the clothing already distributed to ensure that it complies with the Textile Labelling Act and the Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations;
  • indicate the full name and postal address of the dealer on the labels of future products.

The matter was resolved in November 2004.
