Karaoke Compact Discs - Label Claim

In May 2005, the Competition Bureau received complaints regarding the absence of mandatory labelling information on karaoke compact discs being sold at five major electronic retailers in Canada. The karaoke compact discs were supplied by four different American manufacturers or distributors.

The Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, section 10(b)(i), requires that each label have a declaration showing "the identity and principal place of business of the person by or for whom the prepackaged product was manufactured or produced for resale." This is interpreted to mean the dealer’s name and address is sufficient for postal delivery.

As a result of direct communication with Bureau officials, the American suppliers agreed to correct the labelling of current stocks and future manufactured karaoke compact discs by adding complete dealer identification to the labels.

This matter was resolved in July 2005.
