Prepackaged Consumer Products and Textile Articles - Mandatory Labelling Information

The Competition Bureau received information in 2003 and 2004 alleging that a local subsidiary of an international retail chain was importing various prepackaged consumer products and textile articles into Canada without labels, which are required under the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act (CPLA) and the Textile Labelling Act (TLA).

The CPLA requires all prescribed prepackaged consumer products to be labelled with dealer identification, net quantity, and product identity. The TLA requires all prescribed consumer textile articles to be labelled with dealer identification and fibre content.

After inspecting the retail outlet and its products in question, the Bureau wrote to the retail chain’s managers to advise them that the situation could raise concerns under the CPLA and the TLA. In response, the management provided assurance to the Bureau that labels would be applied to the products in question to ensure full compliance with the legislation.

The issue was resolved in November 2004.
